L'ignifugation modifie les réactions à la chaleur et au feu du matériau traité. Il y a d'abord un effet de retard : retard à la décomposition thermique avant l'inflammation; retard au temps nécessaire à l'inflammation; retard par conséquent dans l'émission des fumées, gaz toxiques, corrosifs et combustibles, éléments en ignition détachés de la masse, etc; retard dans la vitesse de propagation de la flamme. Ces résultats peuvent être atteints sur de très nombreux matériaux, lorsqu'ils sont ignifugés de façon rationnelle.
